African Development Bank Seeks Senior Consultant to Lead New Financing Facility for Smallholder Farmers

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has officially opened Expressions of Interest for a Senior Consultant role, a pivotal opportunity for experts in sustainable agriculture, financing strategy, and rural development to shape Africa’s food security future.

The consultant will work closely with the Advisory Committee for a newly proposed Financing Facility for Smallholders under the Agriculture & Agro-Industry Department (AHAI). This bold initiative is part of the Bank’s broader commitment to unlock capital for smallholder farmers, who currently produce over 70% of the continent’s food supply yet face chronic financing barriers.

What’s at Stake?

Africa’s agricultural sector remains the largest employer and a cornerstone of GDP in most countries. Yet smallholders are often left behind in access to credit, modern inputs, and resilient market systems. This facility aims to change that narrative, creating innovative, scalable, and community-driven financing models to sustainably uplift smallholder livelihoods.

Key Highlights:

  • Consultant type: Individual Consultant
  • Consultant Location: Remote working
  • Publication date: 10-Jun-2025
  • Closing date: 25-Jun-2025

Why This Matters for Africa:

It’s a front-row seat to Africa’s agricultural renaissance. As food security, climate resilience, and rural prosperity climb Africa’s economic agenda, initiatives like this financing facility will shape the future of inclusive growth, job creation, and sustainable value chains across the continent.
